Breast reduction surgery, also called reduction mammaplasty, is an increasingly common plastic surgery procedure. More than 90,000 of them are performed in the U.S. every year. The goal of breast reduction surgery in Nashville is to make the breasts smaller and, in many cases, more symmetrical.
Women seek breast reduction for many reasons, from physical pain and discomfort caused by large breasts to wanting less attention focused on their chest. This procedure is often combined with others, such as a breast lift, to address other aesthetic concerns like breast sagging.

Dr. Davis will conduct your procedure at The Atrium, a specialty operating facility at Centennial Hospital. General anesthesia is used during breast reduction surgery. Dr. Davis will reduce, reshape and lift the breasts based on the surgery plan you create together. The nipples may also be repositioned and the areolas reduced if desired.
After surgery, you will wear special garments to help speed up recovery. There will also be tape, bandages and drains used to help you heal. Most clients return home the same day as their procedure.
Plan on being home and resting for a week after surgery. You will need to have someone drive you home as well as help during the early parts of your recovery period. After the drains are removed, you will be able to shower again. The specialty bra will need to be worn full time except when showering for the first 2 weeks. After that, it needs to be worn for another 4 weeks during waking hours.
All non-essential physical activity should be avoided for 2 weeks. Light exercise can resume at that point — things like walking that do not place strain on the surgical site. Most clients are able to resume their usual activities in about 6 weeks, but this varies based on individual healing times.
There may be a noticeable change right after surgery. However, this does not mean you will see your final results right away. Swelling and bruising will take time to subside. Most clients are able to buy new bras about 3 months out from surgery, though subtle changes may continue for up to a year.
Breast reduction might be a good option if you are healthy, have breasts that are naturally large and have some factor motivating you to consider reducing their size. In general, candidates should be done having children as pregnancy and breast feeding can affect results.
Some reasons you might consider a breast reduction include:
● Feeling as though your breasts are not in proportion with the rest of your body● Having your breasts inhibit physical activities● Shoulder, neck and back pain caused by having large breasts● Experiencing frequent migraines attributed to having large breasts● Having difficulty breathing when sleeping on your back● Presenting with skeletal changes caused by the weight of the breasts● Experiencing tingling and numbness in the arms and hands due to bra straps pressing on nerves● Living with constant indentations from bra straps● Developing rashes under the breasts● Getting unwanted attention from others due to your breast size● Struggling to purchase clothing that fits
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the average cost of a breast reduction is $5,680. This does not factor in the cost of things like anesthesia, facility fees or post-operative garments. The good news with breast reduction is that most of the time, insurance will cover the cost of surgery. If yours does not cover it in full, you can speak with us about our financing options.
Some things we ask our clients to do include:
● Stop smoking 4 weeks before surgery● Eat a healthy diet so your body is better able to heal● Avoid medications that thin the blood● Stop eating 8 hours before surgery
